Steps to Calories Calculator
Estimate how many calories you burn walking or running a number of steps, from your weight, height and pace.
I know my step length
Step length is estimated from height: about 41% of it when walking, 48% when jogging and 58% when running. Calories use MET values for each pace.
How calories from steps are calculated
The calculator turns steps into distance using your step length, works out how long that distance takes at your pace, and multiplies the time by the energy cost of that pace (its MET value) and your weight.
Calories for 10,000 steps
For a 70 kg, 175 cm person (7.26 km):
- Slow walk — about 470 kcal in 2 h 16 min
- Average walk — about 390 kcal in 1 h 31 min
- Brisk walk — about 420 kcal in 1 h 8 min
A slow walk can burn more in total because it takes much longer, even though it burns less per minute.
Calories per step
Most adults burn roughly 0.03–0.06 kcal per walking step. Heavier people burn more per step, because moving more weight takes more energy.
Gross vs. net calories
MET-based figures are gross calories: they include the energy your body would use anyway at rest (about 1 MET). To estimate the extra calories from walking only, subtract about 1 kcal per kg of body weight per hour.
Frequently asked questions
How many calories does 1,000 steps burn?
About 30–60 kcal for most adults, depending on weight and pace. A 70 kg person walking at an average pace burns about 39 kcal.
How many calories do 10,000 steps burn?
Roughly 300–500 kcal for most adults. A 70 kg person walking at an average pace burns about 390 kcal.
Do I burn more calories walking faster?
You burn more per minute, but the same distance takes less time. Brisk walking and running still burn more per step than an average walk.
