Fraction Calculator
Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers — with the result simplified and every step shown.
How to enter fractions
Type a fraction as 3/4, a mixed number as 1 1/2 (with a space), a whole number or a decimal such as 0.25. Negative values start with a minus sign.
Adding and subtracting
Bring both fractions to the least common denominator, then add or subtract the numerators. 2/3 + 3/4: the LCD of 3 and 4 is 12, so 8/12 + 9/12 = 17/12 = 1 5/12.
Multiplying and dividing
Multiply numerators and denominators: 5/6 × 3/10 = 15/60 = 1/4. To divide, multiply by the reciprocal: 3/4 ÷ 2/5 = 3/4 × 5/2 = 15/8 = 1 7/8.
The result
The answer is always reduced to lowest terms and shown as a mixed number, a decimal (with repeating digits marked) and a percent. The calculator works with exact whole-number arithmetic, so there are no rounding errors.
Frequently asked questions
How do you add fractions with different denominators?
Find the least common denominator, rewrite both fractions with it and add the numerators: 2/3 + 3/4 = 8/12 + 9/12 = 17/12.
How do you divide fractions?
Multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction: 3/4 ÷ 2/5 = 3/4 × 5/2 = 15/8.
Can I calculate with mixed numbers?
Yes. Type them with a space, like 1 1/2. The result is shown as an improper fraction and as a mixed number.
