Average Calculator
Find the average (mean) of a list of numbers — plus the median, mode, range and geometric mean.
How to calculate an average
Example: 12, 15, 9, 20 and 14 add up to 70; there are 5 numbers, so the average is 70 ÷ 5 = 14.
Mean, median or mode?
The mean uses every value but is pulled by outliers. The median — the middle value — is better for skewed data such as incomes or house prices. The mode is the most frequent value. The calculator shows all three.
Geometric mean
For growth rates and ratios the geometric mean (the n-th root of the product) is the right average. It is shown when all numbers are positive.
For averages where some values count more than others, use the weighted grade calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the average of numbers?
Add them up and divide by how many there are: (12 + 15 + 9 + 20 + 14) ÷ 5 = 14.
What is the difference between mean and median?
The mean is the sum divided by the count; the median is the middle value when sorted. Outliers move the mean but hardly the median.
