How to calculate a test grade
A test grade is the share of the questions (or points) you got right, written as a percentage, and then matched to a grade on your school’s scale.
correct = total − wrong
Example: a test has 25 questions and you get 4 wrong. You have 21 correct, so your score is 21 ÷ 25 × 100 = 84% — a B on the standard US scale.
How to use the calculator
- Enter the total number of questions — or the total points if questions are worth different amounts.
- Choose whether you know the number of wrong or correct answers, and enter it.
- Pick a grading scale: letter grades with + and −, plain A–F, or the percentage only.
- Your teacher uses different limits? Open Edit grade boundaries and type them in — the result and the table update at once.
- The table under the result shows the score and grade for every number of wrong answers. Switch to a step of 0.5 for half-point questions.
Standard letter grade scale
| Grade | Percentage | Grade | Percentage |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97–100% | C+ | 77–79% |
| A | 93–96% | C | 73–76% |
| A− | 90–92% | C− | 70–72% |
| B+ | 87–89% | D+ | 67–69% |
| B | 83–86% | D | 63–66% |
| B− | 80–82% | D− | 60–62% |
| F | below 60% | ||
This is the most common scale in US schools, but it is not universal: some schools start an A at 94% or use a 10-point scale without plus and minus grades (A = 90–100%, B = 80–89% and so on). Always check your syllabus.
Questions worth different points
If questions carry different weights, use points instead of questions: enter the maximum number of points as the total and the points you lost (or earned) as wrong (or correct). A 60-point test where you lost 7 points gives 53 ÷ 60 = 88.33%, a B+.
How many questions can I get wrong?
To find how many you can miss and still reach a grade, multiply the total by the share you are allowed to lose. For a B− (80%) on a 30-question test you can lose 20% of 30 = 6 questions. The table in the calculator shows this at a glance for any test length.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my grade percentage?
Divide the number of correct answers by the total number of questions and multiply by 100. 18 correct out of 20 is 18 ÷ 20 × 100 = 90%.
What grade is 85%?
On the standard US scale, 85% is a B (83–86%). On a 10-point scale without plus and minus grades it is also a B (80–89%).
What percentage is a passing grade?
In most US schools a D− (60%) is the lowest passing grade, although many courses and programs require a C (70% or 73%) or higher to pass.
Can I use points instead of questions?
Yes. Enter the total points as the number of questions and the points you lost as wrong answers. The percentage is the same calculation.
