ROAS formula
ROAS is usually written as a ratio (4×, or 4:1) or as a percentage (400%). A ROAS of 4 means every 1 spent on ads brought in 4 in revenue.
Break-even ROAS
A campaign covers its costs when the profit from its revenue equals what you spent. With a gross margin of 40% and no other costs, break-even ROAS is 1 ÷ 0.4 = 2.5×: anything below that loses money even though revenue exceeds ad spend.
Typical ROAS
Average ROAS varies widely by channel, industry and margin. A common rule of thumb is to aim for at least 3–4× for e-commerce, but your own break-even ROAS is the number that matters.
Frequently asked questions
Is ROAS the same as ROI?
No. ROAS compares revenue with ad spend only. ROI compares profit with all costs.
How do I convert ROAS to a percentage?
Multiply by 100. A ROAS of 3.5 is 350%.
What does a ROAS below 1 mean?
The ads brought in less revenue than they cost, so the campaign lost money before any other costs.
