Use prices without sales tax or VAT: tax is not part of your revenue.

Markup formula

price = cost × (1 + markup)
markup = (price − cost) ÷ cost × 100

Example: a product costs 80 and you add a 25% markup. The price is 80 × 1.25 = 100, the profit is 20 and the margin is 20%.

Markup is not margin

Markup is calculated on the cost, margin on the price. If you need a 30% margin, a 30% markup is not enough — it gives only 23.08%. You need a markup of 42.86%. Enter the margin in the calculator to see the matching markup.

Typical markups

Retailers often use a keystone markup of 100% (doubling the wholesale price), which is a 50% margin. Restaurants commonly mark up drinks far more than food. Your markup has to cover running costs as well as profit, so start from the margin you need.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate markup?

Subtract the cost from the price, divide by the cost and multiply by 100. A cost of 40 and a price of 60 is a 50% markup.

How do I add a markup to a cost?

Multiply the cost by 1 plus the markup as a decimal. 120 with a 35% markup is 120 × 1.35 = 162.

What markup gives a 50% margin?

A 100% markup — selling at twice the cost.
