What is the 16:9 aspect ratio?

16:9 is the standard widescreen shape: 16 units wide for every 9 units tall, a decimal ratio of 1.778. It is the default for HD and 4K television, most computer monitors and laptops, YouTube videos and presentation slides.

height = width × 9 ÷ 16
width = height × 16 ÷ 9

Standard 16:9 resolutions

  • 1280 × 720 — HD (720p)
  • 1920 × 1080 — Full HD (1080p)
  • 2560 × 1440 — QHD (1440p)
  • 3840 × 2160 — 4K UHD
  • 7680 × 4320 — 8K UHD

Not every width gives whole pixels at 16:9. A width must be a multiple of 16 for the height to come out exact — 1000 px wide gives 562.5 px, which the calculator rounds to 563 and flags.
